Lyneril Latha'neras Lavellan is a Dalish rogue and the protagonist of Dragon Age: Inquisition in the Canon world state.

Lyneril was the sole survivor of the explosion at the Temple of Sacred Ashes and believed to be the Herald of Andraste. She gained the title of Inquisitor after she was made leader of the new Inquisition and was responsible for closing the Breach in the Veil and killing the darkspawn magister Corypheus.

Background

Lyneril and her fraternal twin Athera were born to Mihlle and Gherel of Clan Lavellan in 9:13. Athera began showing signs of magic when the sisters were about 8 years old. Lyneril, fascinated with magic, anticipated having her own manifest but after several years she was forced to accept she wasn't a mage. Although she felt it unfair that Athera was gifted with magic when she was not, any resentment she had did not affect the sisters' close relationship. When Athera was still young she was sent to Clan Sulan, which was in need of mages. Lyneril had already considered choosing Dirthamen's vallaslin and her sister leaving clinched the decision. Athera promised to choose Falon'Din's in solidarity with her twin. When Lyneril was 13, Gherel was killed while hunting. Already close with her mother and two living grandparents, her childless uncle Feyren quickly became a surrogate father to her (and later to Lyneril's cousin, as well). Feyren was responsible for teaching Lyneril many of her combat skills. Lyneril was more reserved than her sister and spent more time alone but nonetheless was very close with her clan. She was closest to fellow hunter Tamrith and the two often flirted with the idea of a relationship, although Lyneril was reticent of any quick commitments.

When news of the Divine Conclave reached clan Lavellan, Keeper Deshanna decided to send one of the clan's members to spy on the Conclave. After some deliberation, Lyneril was chosen to go to the Temple of Sacred Ashes.

Approval

Lyneril approves of support and interest in elven, specifically Dalish, culture. She likes learning new things and is fascinated by magic. She approves of actions that help mages. She disapproves of criticism of or ambivalence to elves and support of Templars or the Chantry. She does not like being called the Herald or discussing Andrastianism. Certain things she will only disapprove of if coming from a human.

Approval icons: Greatly Approves

Romance

Lyneril and Solas did not start off on the right foot. She is initially very relieved to see another elf after waking up imprisoned by humans and was comforted by his knowledge of the mark. Needing an ally, she tried to ignore his disparaging remark about the Dalish and remained on relatively good terms with him until an early conversation in Haven also about the Dalish. Lyneril had no patience for his harsh words about her people and she distanced herself from him. They continued to interact while traveling, however, and she was drawn to his knowledge of the ancient elves and magic. They became friends, and although they sometimes clashed over the Dalish, Lyneril held her own and defended her people.

Their romance began with an impulsive kiss in the Fade. Solas eventually came around to the idea of relationship. Having built up walls since joining the Inquisition, it took some time for Lyneril to fully open up to Solas and express how she felt. Together for about 7 months, the abruptness of Solas ending the relationship devastated her. She refused to cry over him and remained angry and distant from him until Corypheus' defeat. Despite her anger, his disappearance further rocked her.

During the two years leading up to the Exalted Council, Lyneril remained single and uninterested in dating anyone else. She barely spoke of Solas, very occasionally checking to see if he'd been seen. The revelation at the Winter Palace crushed her and she maintained a desire to redeem Solas, even though she felt that she should focus only on defeating him and and knows if it comes to that she was willing to stop him by any means necessary.

Doomed

Tropes

Adorkable: A mild example. Tends to tell bad jokes and thinks they're funny, which is more often endearing than cringeworthy.
Alliterative Name: Her full name is Lyneril Latha'neras Lavellan.
Berserk Button: Insulting or hurting elves, particularly the Dalish.
Beware The Quiet Ones: She isn't an angry person, and is usually guarded and level, but when she does get visibly upset it typically shows itself through anger.
Bookworm: A voracious reader.
Brainy Brunette: She is intelligent, intensely curious and is an avid reader.
Brooding Boy, Gentle Girl: With Solas. She is much more open, friendly, and optimistic compared to him.
Brooding Girl, Gentle Boy: With Tamrith. She is much less open, friendly, and optimisitc compared to him.
The Chains of Commanding: Despises her role as Inquisitor and wielding power in general.
Childhood Friend Romance: Her on and off again romance with Tamrith, her best friend since childhood.
Combat Pragmatist: As a rogue, she is not above using underhanded methods to win fights, along with poison, stealth and other sabotage.
Color-Coded Character: Green is the color of her eyes, vallaslin and is incorporated into nearly all her outfits.
Cool Big Sis: Although one of twins, she is older than her sister Athera by several minutes.
Cool Uncle: Her uncle taught her most of her rogue skills.
The Cynic: Due to some hiccups in her upbringing plus being a Dalish elf who is thrust into the world of the Chantry, she tends to be cynical about the world and the motives of people, particularly humans.
Cynic-Idealist Duo: Her and Tamrith. Tamrith, although by no means naive, moves through the world with a more idealistic view than Lyneril.
Deadpan Snarker: To a lesser degree than Vera and Mort but it is still present.
Did You Just Romance Cthulhu: With Solas.

Parental Substitute: After her father died, her uncle acted as a father figure to her.
Rugged Scar: Has a scar across her eye and on her scalp from the Conclave explosion.
Socially Awkward Hero: In contrast to her fellow heros, Lyneril is much more uncomfortable socially. Even when she isn't visibly awkward, is almost always ill at ease with people she isn't close to.
Stoic Woobie: Goes through a whole lot but doesn't like to show it. Part of this is being in the Inquisition where she doesn't feel safe and does her best not to show fear and sadness. She is more expressive with her clan but still tends to bottle things up.
There's No Place Like Home: As adventurous as she can be, Lyneril never wanted to leave her clan longterm and especially never wanted to be part of the Inquisition. She desires nothing more than to return to her community permanently.
Undying Loyalty: To her family, clan and elves in general.
Youthful Freckles: She is very freckled, outdoorsy, and has a bit of a rebellious streak.
